Any time I get something like this coming across my workbench, I just replace the drive. Cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs. I want to see a clean bill of health in the Permissions repair summary. While on the subject of Mac's etc. Mac Won't Read Discs Loading... Doesn't matter if they're the slot loading kind Apple prefers or tray loading like most everyone else uses, they fail.
