The problem with this design is that you have to reach behind the iMac every time you want to connect or disconnect headphones. btw OS X Mavericks, but this has been an intermittent but chronic problem since I first bought this machine in 2011 (early). I only notice this headphone problem 3 months after purchase.

It's probably a simple bug where a different audio output channel gets selected or chosen during the installation or update process.
