I dropped my iPhone in the toilet and the only thing that was wrong with it was that the home button had stopped working. That didn't seem to do much for it. In my experience, the wear and tear issue affects pre-Touch ID iPhones (iPhone 5 and earlier) more than the current models. Once this happens, release the power button, and then press and hold the home button instead. First step did the trick. It will become opaque when pressed, then turn transparent if left alone for a short while. That won't be the case with damaged models, but if it just mysteriously broke they will almost always fix it for you.
Really wasn't expecting it tO, it was progressively getting worse and sometimes completely unresponsive no matter how many times or how hard I pressed! I saw this on Macworld UK and thought you should see it too. It seems more responsive...hope it lasts!
