How long did you wait before opening mail? When I turned it to on, no more problems. I am using Outlook on an exchange server and when I had my iPhone 5s, mail would happily update all the time i.e. I still do not get notification of text messages. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4193866?tstart=0
