On my outgoing mail form at the top I use to have contacts that I could click on and drag to the address box (TO CC Bcc). As for me, I am on OS X 10.8.5 on my 2011 iMac and Mail works fine for me. Are you saying there is no work around? If your current password is not accepted then ignore the box. Apparently Snow Leopard's Default Ports won't accept Authentication None, and change it to Password authentication.
